ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Freya Doggett is a London-based figurative and portrait painter whose work has evolved over seven years of dedicated practice. After training in Fine Art at The Art Academy London, she pursued an MA in History of Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art, specialising in Twentieth Century Art (Modernism and Postmodernism). Drawing inspiration from late Impressionist brushwork and the experimental spirit of modernist painters, Freya’s paintings immortalise fragments of the everyday, centring on the female protagonist both within and beyond the domestic sphere.

Her most recent body of work explores the interplay of memory and imagination, blending elements of fantasy and reality within tranquil, yet sometimes unsettling, landscapes. Through these dreamlike scenarios, she navigates themes of intimacy, nostalgia, and the blurred boundaries of human connection. Animals often occupy symbolic roles in her paintings, appearing as mascots or companions that extend notions of friendship beyond the human experience.

Another significant avenue of Freya’s recent practice interrogates the traditional bedroom environment. Using a soft, muted palette, she deliberately subverts the sensual connotations often associated with the bed, instead presenting it as a space of sanctuary. Her portraits of women, enveloped in duvets or poised in contemplative stillness, offer a tender exploration of sleep, solitude, and the vulnerability of the private sphere. Simultaneously, her work also explores—often with a humorous touch—the daily rituals of self-presentation, highlighting the ongoing internal conflicts and societal pressures women face as they navigate how to express their identity.

Freya has exhibited her work internationally, including at R Gallery (Malta), Galleria de Marchi (Bologna), The Brick Lane Gallery (London) and The Other Art Fair (London, 2023 and 2024); as well as undertaking numerous commissions for public and private clients. Her work has also been featured in Vogue México y Latinoamérica and World of Interiors UK. She is now based in North London.
